New Cards Please (Pearls for Swine Records) 2002 Recorded in an old cowshed in Greenwich (which just happens to be behind our mates house) this is an album chucked together by some guys that would best be described as ‘musicians’. By that we mean there is no air of pretension with this lot, they are not trying to fit into any particular genre, they just play music they like, and play it very nicely indeed. It is sort of funk, soul, jazz, reggae and blues, all at the same time, but blended so smoothly it would be impossible to call this album ‘fusion’. This is music for musicians, which sometimes means introverted, but in this case it is very listenable and cool. We can imagine this going down well in some way cool pub south of the river frequented by people with discernable taste.
